On the river

One of two racecourses
you reach by boat

Royal Windsor sits on a bend of the Thames, a flat figure-of-eight in the shadow of the Castle. The classic Monday-evening arrival is on the water — a riverboat upriver from Maidenhead, the village pubs of Bray on your left, the Castle drawing closer on your right. By the time you step onto the racecourse the day has already begun in the right register: slowly, and on the water.

Where does the day begin?

At The Hinds Head in Bray — Heston Blumenthal’s Michelin-starred restaurant. Welcome glass on arrival, a tasting menu of British classics with paired wines, petit fours and coffee.

How long is the riverboat cruise?

Roughly forty-five minutes upriver from Maidenhead promenade, with afternoon tea served on board. Slightly longer on the return because of the lock cycle, with a char-grilled buffet supper and an open bar.

What’s the dress code?

Smart casual. Jacket optional — this is the Monday evening, not Royal Ascot. A jumper for the boat home is the local recommendation. Closed shoes for the parade ring.
